Have had in the last 2 weeks Katun drums for the Kyocera KM4230/KM5230 star going kaputs.  Syptom is when copier truned on or jam door opened the next 5 to 10 copies come out extremley dark background then after 10 copies( in a long run) gose to normal copy quality. Replaced these drums with OEM drums with not changing any sims or other parts and problem. problem shows up any where from 2500 to 31,00 copies after it is installed.  Will be sending back for warranty claim and will let public know what I find out.  If you start to experince this problem, try oem drum. would hate for a tech to spend the time I did befor found out the the drum was the problem.  Did talk to Ken at Katun tech support and he said that they experinceed back gound in copy of these drums, but by truning up the main charge the problem went away. It did not for me.

Thanks! Let's start a thread now! I purchased a Katun drum for a Ricoh Aficio 650 twice. I've been purchasing Katun products for about 10 years now. There quality control has gone down. Katun has become just like the OEM. A lot of times the OEM will produce a bunch of parts on the cheap. Send it out, and when the calls come into the call centers they say youre the first one we have heard with this issue? Why? Money! It costs money to warranty and take back the cr*p! In the Ricoh series copiers. The condition is great copy quality. But the machine never adds toner! The copies go completely washed out! Only happens with the Katun drum? Of course Katun dosen't know anything about this. I'm the first tech to call in with this problem on this series???

Katun has recently joined with BEI and is trying to get dealers to track their parts against OEM parts.  We are having problems with Katun pm kits cleaning roller on the 2070 and 2585 type boxes and the sep belt on the B0XX series so we are no longer using them.  Katun representative has been offered a chance to talk to our techs to allow them to figure out the problem if they care to. Do you think they have called?
What models are you having toner issues with and are you using OEM toner?

OK OK...I've been using only Katun drums on all my machines....Think of this. Compare the surface of an original drum with a Katun drum..The Katun drum is much more reflective. So that means that the ID sensor will not get the same reading on a Katun.  If you have a workshop, take a testing machine and play around with all the voltages that controls the ID patch.  If you get the right combination (use maths) u you will not have any problems with Katun drums.

I use Katun drums on all my Konicas. I've learned to reset the Drum counter and memory religiously when I use them, or else the d*rn things never work right when an OEM drum would never have a problem.

This explains why Katun keeps calling me up and telling me their specials on drums... they want rid of them.

OEM is a different color from Katun.
The ID sensor led is adjusted for OEM color of drum.
Toshiba, Mita, Minolta, Konica and Sharp get either overtoned or undertoned.  Hint....Hint ID Patch sees a darker or lighter greyscale than OEM because of color.
I challenged a salesman in LA a year ago and his excuse was the color of the drum is patented for that manufacturer.  IE won't work, PERIOD.
Katun has very high quality heat and press rollers and cheap rubber.  Works under a tight budget.
Bad drums cause a proliferation of developer changes and m*ssive recalls for dirty machinesdueto overtoning.
Spend the money on OEM drums and give them business for the rubber and fuser parts.
Also cudos for spooled corona wire.  If you can't string a wire from a spool, it is time to find a new career.  Prestrung is not cost efficient.
